What Is a Cement Resistor?

A practical overview for engineers and procurement teams evaluating resistive solutions.

A
cement resistor — also called a ceramic encased resistor — is constructed by winding a resistive wire element around a core, then encasing the entire assembly in a ceramic cement housing. The cement casing is fired at high temperature, producing a rigid, non-flammable enclosure that provides three key protective properties: excellent heat resistance, moisture resistance, and vibration resistance.

Compared to standard axial resistors, cement types can sustain significantly higher operating temperatures without derating — making them ideal for installation in enclosures, engine compartments, and industrial control panels where ambient temperatures are elevated. The sealed ceramic housing also prevents ingress of moisture and contaminants that could degrade resistance stability over time.

RARA's cement resistor range spans seven series —
RQA, RQR, RQB, RQL in standard configurations, RQR15–50 for higher power ratings up to 50W, and the AQL series which is AEC-Q200 qualified for direct use in automotive applications. The RQO power film variant serves specialized capacitor discharge applications within the same enclosure family.
Construction Technologies

-Wire wound resistive element
-Ceramic cement outer casing
-Fired at high temperature — rigid & non-flammable
-Sealed housing — moisture and contamination resistant
-AEC-Q200 qualified variant (AQL)

Key Advantages

-Superior heat resistance vs standard axial types
-Excellent moisture and humidity resistance
-Robust against shock and vibration
-Non-flammable ceramic enclosure
-Automotive-qualified model available

RARA cement resistors are durable and able to withstand higher temperatures — with excellent heat, moisture, and vibration resistance that makes them the go-to choice when standard resistors cannot survive the environment.

Applications

Where RARA cement resistors are deployed in the field.

Automotive Electronics

The AQL series is AEC-Q200 qualified for direct use in automotive circuits — including HVAC blower motor control, seat heating circuits, lighting ballasts, and battery management systems where resistors must survive automotive temperature cycling, vibration, and humidity over a vehicle's full service life.
Industrial Control Panels

Cement resistors are a staple of industrial control panel design — used as discharge resistors, current limiters, and voltage dividers in VFD panels, motor starters, and PLC enclosures where elevated ambient temperatures make standard axial resistors unsuitable without derating.
High-Humidity & Outdoor Equipment

The sealed ceramic cement housing resists moisture ingress, making cement resistors well-suited to outdoor switchgear, marine electronics, agricultural equipment, and any application where condensation or water splash could degrade an unsealed resistor's performance over time.

High-Temperature Environments

Engine compartment electronics, industrial ovens, and heating system controls require resistors that can operate continuously at elevated temperatures. The fired ceramic casing of cement resistors gives them superior thermal endurance compared to epoxy-coated or film types in these conditions.
Capacitor Discharge Circuits

The RQO power film cement-encased variant (10W, 0.5Ω–75kΩ) is specifically designed for high-power capacitor discharge applications — where pulse energy handling and robust enclosure are both required in a compact, board-mountable form factor.
Vibration-Heavy Applications

Construction equipment, heavy vehicles, rail systems, and industrial machinery subject components to constant vibration that can fatigue wire bonds and crack epoxy encapsulants. The rigid cement casing mechanically protects the wire wound element, maintaining long-term reliability under vibration stress.
